Military reserves

In military terms a military reserve or mass of maneuver can mean army reserves held back from battle in order to deal with unforseen contingencies, to strike a blow on an exposed flank or enemy weak spot, to exploit successes, or to relieve troops that have lost their effectiveness. It can also mean troops not part of a permanent standing army, like volunteer reserve or a reserve component of the United States military.
